The loggerhead sea turtles (caretta-caretta) are a protected marine species, and Zakynthos is one of the most important nesting grounds for them in the Mediterranean. The beaches of Laganas Bay are the main nesting sites where turtles lay their eggs.

Protection is crucial because loggerheads face many threats such as nest destruction, pollution, and disturbance from tourism. For this reason, these beaches are strictly protected, with special regulations in place.
The best time to see the turtles is from May to October, when the female turtles come ashore to lay eggs and the hatchlings emerge from the nests. Visitors can observe this unique natural phenomenon with respect for the environment.
